OK, discussion between the out-of-towners has narrowed it down to Sunday, July 22. I could probably manage driving Saturday the 21st (75% chance) but it would be a real problem for Sharon, who's coming 2.5 hrs down from Owen Sound. For me, the drive Sunday morning, sans heavy trucks and transports would be a real blessing.

The weekend after is out, and I recall Debbie mentioned she's away on vacation in August, so it's now or never! Let's go for it. .. :)

I found a wonderful-sounding restaurant, Greek Odyssey ... everything sounds great, they can substitute side dishes (salad and steamed veggies for rice and potatoes) ... They have an outdoor patio too, so if it's a nice day ..... :D ... click here to check them out (http://toronto.com/E/V/TORON/0004/00/55/1.html) ..... scroll down the menu on the left side of the page, includes price list too, and a map.

They're in Scarborough, 1415 Kennedy Rd. (at Ellesmere), south of the 401. I'll attach a map, below (the restaurant is located at the black dot).

It would be good to know ASAP if this is suitable or not, so an alternate can be selected ... and reservations made in time .. :)

Hi Doreen, count me IN for Sunday the 22nd. I could probably make the Saturday (21) later in the day if others can't make it on the Sunday. I have a commitment here for the first part of the Saturday (but I'll have to check my datebook to see what time it's for).

I'll check back in later today and see what other folks are thinking.

The restaurant looks lovely....good choice..

I say to everyone who is interested at all "Let's Do it" I'm sure it will be a day to remember and "chat" about for days to come... It's always hard to get a date to suit everyone....so HOPEFULLY, this will work.

Sunday sounds great....might even make it an "all nighter"!!! Breakfast anyone? :)

Have a great day everyone...I'm off to the "Salt Mines".

Lunch sounds fine ... 1 p.m. would be best, gives me time to "check-in" if I'm staying over.

Just a note ... could folks please indicate how MANY there will be? partners, spouses, blind dates, etc ... :p .. so we know how large a space to reserve.

I'm so looking forward to meeting everybody, and to getting away period ... :D .. I haven't been to Toronto in nearly 4 yrs!

Weird and friendly? It's from the weird and friendly additives that are put in our coffee out here! Wa'il, you're the one that's weird. The rest of us are friendly. ;)

It's very cool that two LC.ca events are happening on the same day!

Sharon

She already knows about the 'weird and friendly' bit.

She is miles ahead of me on lunches with her girl friends....I have to 'catch up', with my weird and friendly LC WOL friends.

I looking forward to hearing all about how Doreen became such a computer whiz..... or is it wazzz.

Regards
Joe

I am retired so that I can basically attend any number of LC meetings.

By the way.... wouldn't it be a good idea for each to bring a LC favouite recipe...... I have a sauce that makes chicken and turkeys stand up and SING.

Sharon
Fri, Jul-13-01, 15:45
Hi Jomil...(it's been a long week at work...thank goodness it's over, but my mind is starting to shut down!!), do you mean bring a "taste sample" or the recipe.

For me, I'm thinking of coming to the city on Saturday evening...so it would be little more complicated to keep something fresh..(if that was your thought).

We can always share "written recipes" right here......but hey....I'm always open to any great suggestions. (I was actually thinking about making some bread to share, but since we're doing the restaurant thing, didn't think it would be appropriate).

I definitely hope that this will be the first of our Southern Ontario get togethers....but I still have to look at the distance for Doreen, and others....I'm sure it will restrict some of us to the "summer driving weather".

Let us know what you were thinking??? What's this about this sauce....have you been holding out on us?????

:)

Sharon, sorry for my delay in replying to your recipe question.

It was just an after thought to add more discussions to the get to-gether.

If we each bring one or more printed recipes of our LC favourite foods, it might prove beneficial to some of us that are novices in the kitchen.
As we are meeting at a restaurant, I don't think that they would appreciate bringing our own food; but it might be a great idea if we a had a picnic later, similar to the one that the Vancouverites are having. Sorry, I guess it is a BBQ..

We can discuss this and other ideas for the future at the luncheon on Sunday.

Why do I keep calling the noon meal a luncheon and Doreen calls it a dinner. Which is right?

Joe

Hi Doreen, put me down for 2 for the 1:00ish luncheon/dinner on Sunday!!

Jomil, I think that it depends where you were raised in the country or the city or what part of the country....whether your say dinner, lunch or supper.

I'm a born country gal and we always said dinner (12:00ish)...and supper for the evening meal. Now that I live in the City so to speak....it's "lunch hour" for us working folks (not that farmers didn't work...for some reason....they wanted "dinner" at noon time, country folks wouldn't have just a "lunch"!!!... At least this is my take on the meal thing!! I might be totally "out to lunch" here though!!!

See you on Sunday...

doreen T
Mon, Jul-16-01, 07:58
Well, I'll make reservations on Wednesday or Thursday -- perhaps a few more folks will let us know if they can join us by then. I will ask for a couple extra seats .. it's easier to remove a place setting than to squeeze in an extra chair. Unless folks have a better suggestion?

Joe, about lunch vs. dinner ... I think I've only referred to this as a get-together .. :D .. Truthfully, when I first posted the poll to see if there was interest ... I was imagining an evening meal ... and had planned to drive to Toronto Sunday morning, and stay over until Monday. With it being earlier in the day now ... I've changed my itinerary, and will be driving up Saturday instead. It works out well, and I should be back home in time to feed my kitties Sunday night.

OK, so far we have : jomil, Sharon & spouse, sylvie p & spouse, debbie & ? (will dave be joining us?) ... and yours truly.

Actually ... I like the idea of each member bringing a favourite lowcarb recipe, one that hasn't been posted. We can put them all together into an Ontario Special Recipe Collection, which can be posted in our Lowcarb Kitchen, or better yet on the Members' Recipe Webpage! Heck, let's do both!!! .. :D

What do you all think about that??

Looking forward to LUNCH on Sunday (not looking forward to driving in heavy transport traffic Saturday though) ...

Reservations made for Sunday, 1 p.m. --- Greek Odyssey restaurant in the garden patio, if the weather's nice - or indoors, upper level if it's raining (the upper level is an open area, overlooking the whole dining room :)). Non-smoking. Name:"Low-carb Group"

I've reserved for 8 people (we have 7 confirmed) ... we can phone the restaurant up to 11 a.m. Sunday if more people decide at the last minute to join us

Also looking forward to meeting everyone else.....I'm so glad we're doing this.

Hope you have a good lowcarbing weekend, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Thank you for the early reply - I did go and am happy to report that I had both a very good LC lunch AND the pleasure of meeting several of the posters here. it was a small but select group: DoreenT and sharon (with husband) each drove for several hours to get here. Sylvie P and debbiedobson and jomil (who I now know is a very nice man (before I thought that jomil was a girl!) arrived from the Toronto area.

It was like meeting old friends as I've read so many of their posts. And we talked for several hours. Mostly about LC and food but such a pleasure to get to know them and hear about so many things.

It's a thing well worth doing again. Have a happy time in Vancouver tonight!

Hi everybody, made it back to Owen Sound this evening.....whow is it ever hot here.....much hotter than Toronto, which is hard to believe.

Like Barb said, it was a great lunch and a pleasure to meet everyone in person.

"Doreen you're even more beautiful in person than online. (She's so wonderful online it's hard to imagine it gets better). What a treat to meet someone so caring. Debbie, you're gorgeous too....you have a smile that would make anyone's day!!! Barb, it was so nice that you decided at the last moment to join us, I love people who are spontaneous. I hope we hear and see lots more from you on the forum. Joe, thank you for being there too...I'm sure Dennis enjoyed your company also (I noticed both you guys had a hard time keeping your eyes off the leopard skinned waitress, but I'm not sure if you were able to convince her to start low carbing!!) Keep those recipe ideas coming, I love them. Sylvie, I'm holding you to your promise of coming to Owen Sound to visit".

The restaurant and the company were perfect....what a wonderful day!!!! The time went so fast we didn't get near talked out!

To the folks who missed lunch today....we'll catch you next time!!

What a pleasure it was to meet all you wonderful LCarbers at the first Ontario get together in Scarborough on Sunday, July 22nd. Doreen, Debbie, Sharon & Dennis, and Barb.

Doreen, the Greek Odyssey was an excellent choice. I enjoyed my lamb plate very much. It was a great idea to advise the restaurant to substitute veggies, salad and cheese for rice, potatoes and bread. The Coffee was excellent and I was reluctant to leave at 3 PM, but I realized that some of you had to travel a long distance to get home.

I hope that the next get together will not be too long forthcoming.

I learned quite a lot about LC WOL from each of the attendees.

When we all arrived at 1 PM everybody was a little reserved, but when we left, it has all 'hugs and kisses'.

I am looking forward to seeing the digital photos that was taken with Doreen's camera on the Forum, and also copies of recipes that were exchanged. (Sharon you forget to bring your baking recipes.)

Regards to all
Joe

P.S. Although I was glad to see Dennis there, I would have had all the lovely ladies to myself if Sharon had not brought him.

I have a confession. Yesterday at noon when I called the restaurant to make sure the lunch was still on, I told my mom I had to go out and babysit my son for a bit. She innocently asked me where I was going and I kind of stammered about having to meet some people and it weird saying that I met them on an internet site. For a split second (and I mean split second) I almost changed my mind because I was nervous and didn't know what to expect. But I can honestly say what a pleasure it was to meet some of my fellow lowcarbers yesterday. I really enjoyed myself and can't wait for the next get together.

Doreen, Debbie and Sharon - it was great to finally meet you after all these months and reading all your posts and great advise and feedback that you give out.

Barb and Joe - I'm looking forward to hearing and reading more from you.

And yes, Sharon I will try my best to get my butt up to Owen Sound. It's only been about 3 years overdue for me - my cousin is already ticked off at me and I don't want to tick you off either.

Can't wait to see the pictures.

Cheers!

I just wanted to say how wonderful it was to meet everybody, and now when I read your posts, I'll remember ...

Debbie, that big smile just lit up the dining room. Sharon & Dennis, thankyou for sharing your appetizer .. ;) .. Joe, you're right, it was good coffee. Sylvia, I'm so glad you didn't chicken out at the last minute, and BarB, I'm glad you decided at the last minute to jump in!!

As everyone has already stated, the meal was wonderful .. and no problem to leave off the potatoes, rice and bread, and add extra salad and steamed vegetables. The grilled quail and lamb was delicious. There was lots of lowcarb discussion, and a little social chit-chat too. As well, the seed has been planted for another get-together .. keep your eyes on this forum folks... ;)

Anyway, here's a picture of the group ..

Oh you guys .... ! What a great looking group.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the luncheon. I just gave up my car and we only have one between DH & I. We're still trying to figure out the scheduling for the van. LOL

I'm so glad you all had a great meeting, sounds like you all enjoyed yourselves. The picture is great, glad you thought of it Doreen. And the food sounds yummy. I love lamb & Greek salad.

Perhaps I can make it to the next one. Hopefully it will be a tad north, say Barrie or Orillia, Newmarket or Bradford area?
