<p>Dear readers,<br>
I'm not really going to attack a low carb diet, although it is obvious that a
diet, rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, is essential to a healthy lifestyle.
Nature and science tell us that.<br>
My contribution to this forum is not of how much, but rather of which kind of
carbs to consume:<br>
Of the about 200 monosaccharides, or glyconutrients(carbohydrates, or simple
sugars) found in nature, scientists have identified 8 as the components (shapes)
of letters that make up the cellular alphabet. Cells communicate by using these
8 known monosaccharides to shape letters and words. <a href="http://www.healthandlongevity.info/HarpersBiochemistry.pdf">Harper's
Biochemistry, 24th/25th edition, chapter 56</a> and
<a href="http://content.karger.com/ProdukteDB/produkte.asp?Aktion=showproducts&ProduktNr=223491&searchWhat=books&ContentOnly=false">
Acta Anatomica, 161/1 - April 1998</a>.</p>
<p>These carbs, or glyconutrients are ESSENTIAL for cell to cell communication
and are involved in every aspect of living, incl. recognizing and eliminating
diseases, viruses, toxins/free radicals and yes, excess fat. Furthermore, these
nutrients are highly lacking in today's common diet.</p>
<p>The discovery of these "sugars" and their function is what has every major
medical research facility, the drug companies and most medical science
writers/editors on their toes these years. IT IS INCREDIBLY
EXITING!</p>
<p>You all owe it to yourselves to look very closely at the discovery of these
sugars, especially if you or a loved one suffers from a disease condition!</p>
<p>And no, we are NOT talking about the white granulated table sugar here!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Best of wishes of a healthy future for you all.</p>
<p>Sincerely,</p>
<p>Brian, California ;) </p>

Explanation of ScienceGuy's deliberately obscure post:
Some proteins in your body have "decorations" of long chains of polysaccharides. Polysaccharide is just a fancy way of describing a molecule made up of a bunch of sugar molecules like glucose or fructose, linked together. These sugar chains are essential in allowing your body to recognize, sort, and otherwise deal with these proteins. Think of them as "tags" on the proteins. They're very important.
HOWEVER.
Key point that ScienceGuy left out: the body is perfectly capable of MAKING most of the sugars he's talking about FROM fats and amino acids. In other words, if your body needs sugars and they're not available, it gets busy with the organic chemistry. So while adding the rarer sugars like mannose and xylose to your diet may help, it's not absolutely necessary. Possibly after more research has been done, it may be worth it to add the foods high in the rarer sugars during specific episodes (mannose during UTIs, for example. It's found in aloe vera) or while in maintenance. Strawberries, for example, are high in xylose. If this becomes the Next Big Thing, there will be dietary guides all over the place, and it'll be easy to pick the low-glycemic-index stuff.
But beware the pseudoscientific antilowcarbing! He gave himself away in the first sentence.

if ANY carb is so good for us then why did our ancestors aka the cavemen live such long lives?? Nowadays people are luck enough to see their late 60's or 70's??? That's only cuz of all the extra carbs added to our foods....

I'd always thought prehistoric humans had a lifespan of only 25 years or so. Ive never before run into the idea they exceeded current lifespans. Do you have any sites you can link that support this?
Thanks.

There is no support. Prehistoric humans did not live longer than present day humans. We have the longest average lifespans in all of human history. We have such long lives because of medicine, medical advancements, hygene, cleaner water, etc.
Average Prehistoric humans probably were not on average as fat as the average human is now days.

Are you saying Atkins doesn't promote fruit & vegetables? He has many listed in his books. Fruits and some vegetables are a no-no during induction but more veggies are added during OWL, along with some fruits. Have you read any of the Atkins' books? I don't state that the diet is only fruits & vegetables. I eat meat 3 times a day also.

No, it's not just you. Other than berries, I don't see where fruits are "promoted" on Atkins. And as far as veggies go, I ate 20 times more veggies before I started Atkins. I love veggies and miss all the different varieties. So if you're confused, LoLa, then so am I!

All I have to say is that I have lost 50+ lbs. and I eat veggies for lunch and dinner(sometimes add a salad to breakfast if I feel like it). I sometimes eat a small apple when I don't have some berries. I also eat cantalope. Check out the Atkins' website to see what they have to say about vegetables, http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/26-666870.html and fruits, http://atkins.com/Archive/2003/2/10-469820.html

it is the simple way of making carbs from amminoacid and fats...the organ responsabile is liver. the hormons that took part are several: glucagone, GH, glucocorticoids as aldosterone....

Morgan –
I did not intend anything “hateful” in my remark, though I concede that the satire I made of your position was a bit biting.
I was merely trying to say that mixing religious myths with science (as you were doing by invoking Methuselah) is not good science. (It is not good religion, either, because it implies that religious beliefs can be subject to scientific review – they cannot be without undermining religious authority.)
Science deals only with things that can be verified in the real world. Religious faith deals with things that by definition CANNOT be verified in the real world.
There is no scientific evidence that anyone has ever lived to the ages proclaimed for Methuselah. Indeed, the evidence suggests human lifespans were, on average, well under 30 years until comparatively recently.

You all seem to have a problem with me for some reason. All I did was respond to someone's post about "this generation being the only people in civilization who have lived this long." I didn't realize I was starting a war and would be attacked by so many. I was here to talk about LC'ing, but apparently several of you didn't read the entire string and took my post out of context.
Whatever the case, I'll leave you guys to this thread and will go elsewhere. Sorry I offended so many people...that was not my intentions. Good luck to you all.

It just drives me crazy when people calling themselves Christians get all kneejerk huffy and defensive about their faiths and paints any one who disagrees with their particular interpretation with the heretic brush! Christ preached tolerance incase you forgot. If your faith (whether it is in religion, science or LCing) can't withstand some good natured ribbing or even some meanies (not that anyone was being mean) then you and your God have some serious talking to do. Can I be on the ignore list too? And yes, I consider my self a Christian and do my best to follow His teachings:)

Scriptures on that point are at odds - some say to flee from non-believers, others say to engage them in a friendly fashion. You can pretty much find support for whatever it is you'd like to do - which, in a supposed guide to moral living, does not inspire my confidence.

I think that the Bible is a bit like the US Constitution, Majestic Vagueness and all that. There are a couple of absolutes in both of them, but they are pretty much open to interpretation. Thats why I say, as long as you are not hurting anyone or bringing down society at large then follow your own path. Whether it leads you to Heaven or Hell is up to God and we will all find out when we get there :)

Actually, you can have Strawberries, Fresh Apricots, Blackberries and blueberries, Cantaloupe, cherries, cranberry, Honeydew melon, papaya, Pineapple, raspberries, strawberries and watermelon, just not during induction...
That's a pretty good variety for me!
As for vegetables, you can eat almost any except for potatoes, corn and leek which are quite high in carb...

Guys, Methusela is a legend....two words, robert heinlein. Oh yah, and the bible. (apologizing in advance for any unintended insults to religious folk)
Scientific american and stephen j gould (I think)says prehist. man died mostly from impacted wisdom teeth. check it out. But yah, they died pretty young. Rough living in the wild, you know. No pedicures, no grocery delivery. ahh!
Atkins doesnt PROMOTE fruits, he says understand their impact on your sugar and insulin level. berries and melons are allowed after induction, slowly, and you gotta watch them. If youd read the book, youd understand that he would rather you ate fruits and nuts and veggies and meats than REFINED grains and sugars.
Not that Im listening...I actually bought 'no-sugar-added ice cream the other day'. AHH! But you wanna know what I crave? That damned coolwhip I bought for the kids. Does that make any sense?!?!?! What would prehistoric man think?

So what? If we accept your mythology as factual history, then Methusala is by definition an historic figure, therefore not a prehistoric human. And even if there was a man named Methusala whose life spanned 900-odd years, that doesn't falsify GorbTech's claim that the average lifespan is longer now than it was then.
Have I qualified for your ignore list yet?
