Well, I was just fine for 3 days. Las Vegas has the most carb friendly menus I have ever seen.

THEN...I got the worst cold/virus I have ever had in my life. If came on so suddenly. My Dr prescribed Z-pack and a codeine cough syrup that he admitted had a little sugar in it. My BG went to 140-180 the first day I was sick. It stayed there for 3 days. I was coughing my head off.

I am back at my Mom's in California now and my daughter and I are still too sick to travel to Mexico.

Big question: I have my BG back down to 120...will it go back to the 80's-90's after i get off all these meds? I hate to take Metformin while I am taking other stuff.

BTW-Metformin is $5.00 for 100 (500mg) in Mexico. My brother bought me some...just in case my BG goes crazy.

Lisa, all my buddies...what happens when you get sick? Gosh...I was so good! I had one glass of dry wine with my lobster before I got sick.

Good News...I lost 5 lbs from not eating! back down to 200! (Can't wait to get back home and on my schedule...I bought an ab roller in Vegas....still did a little while sick...I will defeat this curse!!!)

Oh, darn. Getting sick sucks.

But I'm glad for you you'll be returning home and getting back on your schedule soon. And one thing about colds, they do pass eventually.

Welcome back.

(That's amazing about the metformin.)

Hey Rainne...sorry the Metformin was 50 (not 100) for 5 bucks...still quite a deal

I managed to do 500 crunches on the ab roller yesterday and 40 laps in the pool. Got the BG back to 110 this morning. Have to admit I have hardly had 800 calories per day...but good ones!

I have decided thst my "tagline" will be "LC Junk Food Is Still Junk Food"! ;)

It sure is still a good deal! Especially consdering I can't get it here at all for any price (need a prescription and my Doc likes designer drugs)

Wow, 800 calories is very very low. How can you be sure you aren't teaching your body to shut down your metabolism survive the what might seem like a famine to it?

I try to keep around 1200 calories whilst dieting. I am guessing 800 cos I am so sick...

Still badly ill tody...BTW...bg averaging around 120. Had to take the cough syrup....broke a blood vessel in my throat coughing....

Some vacation...can't wait to be home....

My bg tends to rise when I get sick, even if I'm not taking any medicine. The rise in bg to 120 may not be related to the cough syrup but to the stress on your system from the cold itself. If you need the cough syrup, I think you should take it.

I hope that you feel better soon.

Lisa, all my buddies...what happens when you get sick?

What happens when you get sick is that your body produces stress hormones such as cortisol which stimulate glucagon production by your liver and your blood glucose rises. That's a very simple explanation, but basically what happens in a nutshell. Pain, stress and illness can all have this effect.

Sorry to hear that you're feeling so yucky, especially on vacation. Take whatever meds you need to for you to feel better (like that cough medicine) and call your doc if those blood sugars really take a jump (mine suggested anything over 200 fasting was worrisome, but I'd probably be calling him if it was over 150 fasting).

Hope you're feeling better soon!
