I am 28 years old and have been type 1 for 23 years. I have been in 'not so good' control up until I began low carbing earlier this year. I just started Atkins about 2 weeks ago and everything has been great. My BS are great, I feel great and I never see myself going off this diet. Problem, I am petrified of diabetic renal disease and fear that all the protein that I eat may cause this. Has anyone else done Atkins or is currently doing it? What are your thoughts?

Go to this website:

http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com

It's for Dr.Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. You can download several chapters of his book for free, or just go buy his book (which I highly recommend). Dr. Bernstein is himself a Type 1 and has been for many, many years. His story itself is an inspiration. The only fault I can find with the book is it needs to be revised and updated as insulin technology has made huge strides in the past 5 years. However, his clinic is VERY good about answering questions if you call them. (I've personally never called, but I've seen several posts from other folks who have and were pleased they called the clinic)
BTW, when Dr.B began his hi pro/lo carb plan he already had problems with his kidneys and they actually improved--not worsened.

Best of luck to 'ya...check back here often if you have any questions....

Look in Appendix A for a writeup on kidney damage, diabetes and protein. This Chapter is available online at Dr. B's website.
