My 37 year old daughter is considering Atkin's. I just gave her the book to read. I am wondering if it is ok for her. She has a severe case of fibromyalgia, very high cholestrol, she smokes and has a fatty liver. She also neeeds to lose some weight. I guess it is the liver problem that has me wondering if it is a good idea for her to go on the WOE. I don't know if her doctor is an Atkin's fan so I am leary about her asking him.

Hi Georgie,

Yes, a low carb plan such as Atkins will help your daughter.

Have a look here at Dr Sandra Cabot's advice for folk with fatty liver: http://www.weightcontroldoctor.com/healthtopics/a-z/fattyliver.asp

You could also do a search of this forum for "fatty liver." I have seen folk post that their liver problems have improved on low carb.

Cheers.

Cholesterol can be greatly improved on low carb dieting, just as long as she makes sure to follow the plan including veggies and so on. Alot of the fats on Atkins such as olive oil, fish pills, avacado, and so on are good for raising good cholesterol which in turn lowers bad.

As for the smoking, there are smokers on Atkins. Some though find they have more energy and feel healthier overall, so they include quiting smoking or at least cutting back as part of thier new healthier life style.

I don't know what fibromyalgia is. The best thing she can do is first read the book and visit the web site. Then hopefully she can find a Low Carb friendly doctor who can help her through this and monitor her cholesterol and such. If she finds Atkins too restrictive, there are other low carb diets out there that can still help her. Have her read about a few others and choose which one she could envision following for a lifetime of better health.

Thank you both for your replies. :)

I looked at the url briefly this morning and it looks like she is going to have some problems since she has to avoid cheese and the popular sugar alcohols. I am going to take another look at that site and do a search on the forum for fatty liver.
