OKay first of all, I know that is not impossible to become pregnant after tubal ligation. I am a Registered Nurse and also understand HOW it happens after tubal ligation. BUT I am WORRIED. I am 30. I have a daughter who will soon be 2 and I had tubal ligation when she was born. I am now 1 month LATE on that TOM. I will just die if I am pregnant. Anyone else here ever got pregnant after your tubes were tied. If so how did you deal with it and when did you first start to think "I know my tubes are tied but I think I may be pregnant."

First of all, as a nurse, you should know that this is not something to just collapse in worry over. If you think you may be pregnant, get a test! After tubal ligation, there is a greater instance of ectopic pregnancy...hence, an increased risk to YOU.

Secondly, I have read on this site that it is not completely uncommon for a woman to skip periods on this WOL. (I'm thinking this can't be all bad, right??? That's why I started Depo, but the weight gain is what made me quit and get MY tubes tied.)

I have not become pregnant since, but I come from a medical family and have to admonish you to be proactive.

Good luck. I hope everything works out for you.

I had my tubes tyed 7 years ago. Recently I dident have a period for 3 months :daze: For me though it would have been a good thing if I was pregnant, new husband now ;) But I wasent and things went back to normal. My Dr. did send me to a gyno for a complete going over.(she is the one that reconmended Atkins to me lol). If you think you are, check up on it. I have missed the occasional period though. I am sure it is nothing to worry about. But check with your dr just in case.

How in the world can you become pregnant after tubal ligation? I'm looking to have this done as soon as this baby is born and certainly don't want to have to worry about getting pregnant.

If they actually cut and tie the tubes, how does an egg get through?

Hi lovetolose,

Yes, it is faintly possible that you are pregnant, but the odds are heavily against it.

Low carbing is notorious for messing up our cycles. ;)

And you are definitely not the only one with the same worry. Have a look at this thread: Pregnant after tubal????? (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107895)

Hope that helps to reassure you. And by all means, if TOM doesn't show up, have a pregnancy test for peace of mind.

There are a number of different procedures, but they don't generally cut and tie, anymore. That and burning were actually the procedures with the highest "fail rate". What is usually done these days (and was performed on me) is just clamping the falopian tubes with titanium clamps.

The way a tubal ligation can fail is simple: the body has a miraculous way of healing itself and "finding a way". Talk to your doctor extensively before you have your surgery. If s/he does not immediately tell you that there is a 1 in 250 (4/10s of a percent or 0.4%) fail rate, find another! Also, keep in mind that rate is comparable to the fail rate for any contraceptive on the market...(if I remember correctly, oral contraceptives are only 97% effective, even when taken correctly) The only proof positive is abstenance.

That abstinance thing sure won't be popular with the husband. Guess we have to take our chances.

Maybe if I get a tubal ligation and he gets a vasectomy, we'll be fairly safe! (4 kids is enough!!!) :p

Vasectomy also has a fail rate: 1 in 600. Better than ligation, but again, not fool proof!

Good luck with whatever you choose. For the record - I'm happy with my choice.

Thank you so much for this information. I can't tell you how much it helps me out. I have friends (actual people I know) who had accidental pregnancies after vascectomies, but had never before heard of it after tubal ligation. Therefore, I thought tubal ligation was a safer method.

Gosh, I just want to be happily married and not have any more children. Is this so much to ask???? (Why I laughinly suggested he and I both get "fixed".)

I really wouldn't worry. As I said before, the success rate is still as good or better with TL and V than other contraceptives. If indeed you choose to go through with the ligation, you should rest just as easily as if you were taking the pill or Depo.

For the record, and I may have said this before, I'm happy with my choice! :D

Heh, I had a tubal last summer (also after only one kid) and I have also just missed a period. I would probably be a bit freaked-out, but I also had thermal ablation surgery (for my heavy periods) at the same time, breast reduction surgery 6 weeks ago, and just finished 3 straight months of the pill (to control my endometriosis and adenomyosis), and there's always the dietary thing to consider, too.

The chances of my being pregnant are pretty much 0...but that possibility still lingers in my mind and scares the bejeezus out of me. If I were to get pregnant, the thermal ablation and adenomyosis would pretty much guarantee a miscarriage....

I had a tubal ligation in 1990 and got pregnant in 1998. After getting over the initial shock, I was thrilled. Then I had a miscarriage at about 8 weeks. Have not gotten pregnant again; have not used any birth control or had the tubes re-done.

Frankly, even at 38 I'd be thrilled if I got pregnant again today...although Hubby might not be quite so happy!

I just recently got married and my husband and I would love to get pregnant. Except I had my tubes tied 6 years ago and can't afford a reversal. Anyone have any tips as to how I can get pregnant or if it is even possible after so long.

Yes, I am 37 and me and fiance have discussed wanting children after we are married. I had a tubal almost 13years ago, and I don't want to have any surgery, so I guess my question is how likely is it the I can get pregnanct and carry the baby full term. How likely does your body heal it self so you can conceive again?

Hullo ladies, I'm afraid I have bad news for you.Tubal ligation is intended to be a permanent procedure, so even after surgery to reverse the procedure, the pregnancy rates are still quite low.

Without surgery, your chance of pregnancy is miniscule. The occasional stories you might hear, are just that - occasional stories. Not something you can assume for a moment will happen to you.

Why not talk it over with your doctor?

To both of you trying for pregnancy-I don't know what you can do without surgery...just try and hope, I guess. But if you decide to go through with the surgery, my aunt had it done (Her kids are in their late twenties), and at 48, she has a 6 year old and a 2 1/2 year old. It worked really well for her....twice!! :) Good luck!

In 1970 while using the rhythm method of birth control I got pregnant and gave birth to my first child. In 1972 while taking the pill I got pregnant and gave birth to my 2nd child. Realizing in 1974 that I needed to take a more foolproof approach to birth control I had a tubal ligation done. Not just "tied", which is snipped and sealed but the doctor also removed the "fingers" which grab the eggs to feed them through the tubes. I was told this that this procedure would guarantee the prevention of any future pregnancies. 4 years later I gave birth to my 3rd child. 9 months after that I miscarried my 4th child.

What I learned from this is that God is the Creator of life. His choice as to whom He will entrust to raise each child is the greatest honor any woman could ever receive. So if you find yourself to be a statistic...do not grieve about it, rejoice in that you have found favor with the God of this universe.

He chose you among all others.

I had a tl done after our 4th child. we were suppose to have it after our 3rd but couldn't got preg. almost right away.my doc. was wating to see if i need a partial hestoractamy or if I could have my tube tied as really no form of b.c. really worked for me. I had one kid with my frist husband. we ended up divorcied and with my husband ended up getting prg. at the same time I had one olverie and tube removed while I was on brith control. had some complacations during preg. and brith. She changed my brith controll and I still got preg. had complacations though that one and the brith too. she suggested that I get fixed becase having anymore could put mine or the babys life in danger but we had to wait and see what I needed as I have always had complactions with my pierods. well I got pregnate again and we did almost lose her both during preg. and at brith. we were told we could not have anymore and got the t.l she is now 8 1/2 now I've gainded wiaght have had a dischare and having what appers to be normal peiods. but gettting light headed and migrains as my husband and I were both exstemaly fretal this is scaring me. I know what people have said that if God whants it it will happen but we can't do this again. I can't go though another one. I'm taking a pt tofind out but also wanted to tell my story as not everytime it's whats best.

WOW! You are so right I just had to reply. My new husband (after 1 year of marriage) and I are hoping that we find favor with God since we can't afford the tubal reversal. I had my tubes tied in 1990 -- long time I know but truly I believe there is nothing to hard for God nor impossible for Him to perform. Pray with us that God's favor will rest on us.

It's been a few weeks since you posted this- by now, an HPT will show if you're pg. Have you gotten your period since then?

Sometimes our hormones can be wacky for no apparent reason. If you've been losing weight very quickly, you might temporarily stop menstruating. Or you could just "skip a month" and never know exactly why it happened. That happened to me when I was 18, my first month in college, and there was NO WAY I could have been pg!

Send your prayers our way also. I had my T.L. back in 1990. I have re-married since then and for a number of years, was satisfied with the 3 children I already had. I have a Lupus and Type 2 diabetes, so my health is not the greatest. My periods have been problematic for about 2 years now. But in the past few months I've had a little weight gain and began feeling some fluttering recently. Don't know if that's all in my head or what. Haven't taken pg test or been to the doctor. Think I'm kinda scared to be told, "No, your not pregnant!" It would be a miracle from the Lord at this point in our lives. Our baby boy is 18 now. My grandmother's quote: If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, that's all you need. :rheart:

tambriati,
Go ahead and take the test so you don't have to wonder anymore. I have 3 kids, and I have definitely felt that fluttery feeling sometimes when I'm NOT pregnant.
That being said, my sister's baby, about to turn 1 in May, has a big sister...who was 18 when he was born. She thinks she may be expecting again, and it has been such a blessing in her life.

If they actually cut and tie the tubes, how does an egg get through?

if you want to make sure you don't and this is non reversable have them cut a piece out and burn the ends. but i would just recomend some form of contraceptive because you won't be able to change your mind later

i agree thank you and that must be why God has gifted me children with minor to serious learning disabilities like adhd, odd(opositional defiance disorder) and anxiety disorder. you have just made me feel better about this situation with my now two boys 3 and 7. God gave them to me because he knew i would know just what to do to help them my 7 yr old gets 3 and 4's which are pretty much a's and b's so thank you for lifting my spirits :D   :)  :yay:
