I went on a spending spree at The Health Nut today and bought a bunch of Frankenfoods I've never tried before :). Snacks, chips, crunchies, jelly, Atkins syrup, Atkins Morning Start bars. The Heavenly Desserts meringues (vanilla) were the first ones I opened...

YUM!!!!!! I can't put them down!!! I've eaten five and I can't stop!!!

These melt in your mouth.

The ingredients list "modified malt" as a sugar alcohol, and claim that it has no net impact. Anyone know the skinny?

Ingredients: Modified malt, egg whites, water, natural vanilla flavor, salt, vinegar, sucralose. 1 g of carbohydrate per piece (which they claim comes from the modified malt).

Oops, excessive consumption has a laxative effect... they weren't kidding about that sugar alcohol. Guess I better put 'em away now...

Just one more...

"Modified Malt" is probably a way of describing maltitol which is made by chemically altering maltose - a sugar from malted grains. Maltitol is definitely a polyol or sugar alcohol.

There's tons of posts and articles, too (see the "truth about low carb sweeteners info" quick link over on the right?) about sugar alcohols here.

Always best to ask the makers to clarify if that's maltitol, is there a webpage or contact information on that package?
