Hey Everyone-
I'm stalling a bit in induction due to experiments with "frankenfoods" and I thought if I went back to basics and stuck to a few key foods for a few days, then incorporate other induction foods, I would get a grip - so my question:

What are your top 5 foods (or dishes) you recommend that are induction friendly and seemed to be most effective at promoting loss?

Egg salad, scrambled eggs, steak salad, hot wings....

I have noticed the more eggs I eat the easier it is to lose weight. Strange but true. Hope that helps. :)

Bacon, hamburger patty, steak, grilled chicken, pepperoni -- I like to put cheese on a lot of that too. I do six slices of bacon in the microwave for six minutes, I like it crunchy, sprinkle with grated cheese, and heat again to melt the cheese. One of my favorite snacks. :)

Oh, and it's not a food, but I love Diet Rite with Davinci sugar free french vanilla. I practically live on it.

*Deviled eggs

I am new to the diet too. So far, I like to eat my own Seafood Salad. I do have to note that the kind at the grocery store often has cornstarch added. I also like salads with blue cheese and bacon as well as crab meat mixed wtih cream cheese on celery.

I think everyone here is wonderful for sharing their suggestions. It makes me laugh when people ask me, "Well, What can you eat?" :)

My top 5:

- Filet Mignon or Ribeye cooked on the grill (med-rare of course)

- Chicken or Veal marinated in egg/cream/seasoning then brearded with freshly grated parmesean reggiano and fryed in olive oil/butter

- Cream Cheese/SF rasberry Jello concoction. (simple to make, mix cream cheese with heavy cream, 1-3 pkts or splenda and a tsp of vanilla... then make the jello according to the directions, throw both the unset jello and the cream cheese mixture in a blender and then pour into bowl and chill)

- zuchinni squash "hash browns" (shread zuchinni, add beaten egg and seasoning, fry with butter)

- Turkey Tenderloins with Spinach - (pre-steam spinach, slice turkey breast tenderloin to 1/2 cutlets, season turkey, place spinach and cheddar cheese on top. bake with butter)

The above are on this week's top 5 list ;>

Cheers!

In response to the question about Buffalo Wings....

I make Buffalo Tenders by taking chicken tenderloins and tossing them in a bit of soy flour. I fry these in peanut oil (any oil but olive oil will work, olive oil has too low of a smoke point to cook them fast)

For the sauce I use 2 parts butter to 3 parts Frank's hot sauce.

Toss 'em together, and you have Buffalo tenders :) The only carbs appear to come from the soy flour. (Frank's does not appear to have carbs, although I have never tested for hidden carbs)

Five favorite induction-friendly foods for me:

- yogurt with vanilla shake mix blended in, my everyday breakfast

- snack: hard cheese (and/or meat spreads like chopped liver) on cucumber slices instead of crackers

- get a bag of frozen chicken breasts from Costco, coat one with a spoonful of olive oil and some spices and bake, then chop and put in salad

- Gardenburger "hamburger style", only 2 net carbs per patty, nice if you want a break from meat

- "Easy Jello Cheesecake" from the recipe section here, great induction dessert

I can't seem to find the "Easy Jello Cheesecake" recipe on this site. I looked in the Low Carb Recipes under "deserts," but don't see it there. Can you tell me where it is, or post it here so I can get it?

Thanks!

Tacos - I usually make 3, old el paso white corn taco shells with ground beef, old el paso seasoning and cheese. (watch out though, this comes to about 24g total so sometimes I'll substitute a low carb tortilla shell for one of the white corn taco shells.)

Bufallo Wings

Filet Mignon

Girlled chicken breast with lemon pepper, garlic salt seasoning.

Chicken Quesadillas (low carb tortilla, cheese, chicken, side of a bit of spicy salsa)

Vodka! - straight, water chaser :) Again, be careful, for some people alcohol will turn you back into that crazy carb eater you were before, and it will also stop your body from burning fat until all the alcohol is out of your system.

I'm only a week into this myself, but I'm enjoying the freedom to eat things which I have thought of as "I really shouldn't be eating this...it's so fattening and bad for me..." for the last 20 years!

#1 - CREAM CHEESE on EVERYTHING! yum!
(examples TRY: Mock Danish... Scrambled eggs with cream cheese and salsa... Smeared on salami...Spread on a slice of deli ham add some chopped red pepper, roll up and enjoy...Spread on deli style turkey slices, add a couple chopped jalapeno slices, roll and enjoy...Stuffed into chicken breast, then wrapped with bacon...the list is endless!! I have a good halibut recipe using cream cheese as well.)

#2 - all kinds of hard CHEESE

#3 - NUTS

#4 - EGGS

#5 - ok, so this one was not really considered bad before but I've always loved any type of SALAD concoction I could dream up.

I'm on my 3rd week of induction and these have been some of my fave's so far...

1. McDonald's Bacon Ranch salad w/ grilled chicken...I take out the tomatoes and carrots and eat it with Hidden Valley Three Cheese Ranch (1 carb/tbsp) instead of the Newman's Own Ranch that comes with it (4 carbs/tbsp). These salads are the best ever!

2. Diet Vanilla Coke...this really helped get me through the first week since I'm a life-long soda addict. The diet Vanilla Coke tastes alot less like 'diet' than regular diet Coke does. However, I haven't had any this week...just water! I'm very proud of myself.

3. Starbucks...Grande iced decaf Americano w/ sugar-free vanilla and an inch of heavy cream. (an Americano is made w/ water instead of milk, but by adding the heavy cream it tastes like a latte!) Yes, it is the biggest pain in the butt to order, but all of the baristas at my local starbucks know my drink now, and it is SO GOOD. Like my soda addiction, I was also VERY addicted to fancy espresso drinks, especially Frappacinos (I used to work in a coffee house!) and this has saved my dieting life on several occassions. Any coffee shop can make this drink, I just happened to prefer Starbucks. I estimate 4 carbs for it. TRULY TRY THIS IT'S INCREDIBLE!

4. Pepperoni 'chips.' I buy a package of the pepperoni pizza topping rounds and lay them out on a paper towel on a plate, and cover them w/ another paper towel. Microwave them for 3 1/2 mins, and you have crispy pepperoni chips that are a great substitute for their potatoe counterpart! For less salty, try making them w/ canadian bacon rounds instead of pepperoni.

5. Bacon Cheese Burger. I buy frozen hamburger patties, then when its time for dinner I throw one on the George Forman Grill (a wonderful invention) and let it cook for 3 minutes. Then I open the grill and put 3 stips of bacon on top of the burger and let it finish cooking together. When it's done I add a slice of cheese on top and there ya go, a 7 minute dinner that is very yummy!

Those have been my staples and the Americano is my new 'comfort food.' I also eat Atkins bars, egg salad, and lots of smoked salmon (the packaged kind from the deli) w/ cream cheese. Another good one is baby salad shrimp in melted butter! Happy eating!!

This is only my 5th day, but there is one meal that I find particularly satisfying.

I try to cook bacon ahead of time and keep it in the fridge. It's always there to add to whatever I'm eating or just to snack on!

Anyway, here's my fav so far;

2 fried eggs
Just before the eggs are done, lay 2 slices of sharp cheddar on each egg and 3 or 4 half strips of bacon.

Put the lid on the pan for a minute or two to warm the bacon (that is, if you just took it out of the fridge!) and melt the cheese.

OMG mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Getin' me through:
1) sliced cheddar nuked until crispy; dip in cheese grease, yum!
2) low fat tortillas w/ smoked salmon crm cheese, green onion
3) atkins cheesecake - just no crust and Splenda, rest the same!
4) cucumbers fresh from my garden!
5) celery and PB; not 100% legal but a total treat!

hi laribien,
Thank you for the wonderful idea of the low fat tortillas w/ smoked salmon crm cheese, green onion. I really love smoked salmon on rye bread or bagels this way and can't have it. Never thought of using the tortilla in place of the bread or bagels. You have made it possible for me to have a nice treat again for lunch. I have been just taking the salmon and wrapping the it around the cream cheese mixed with green onion. Also added the it to a salad mixed in the cream cheese.

hi nancy and others......

I mistakenly typed 'low fat tortillas' but meant low CARB, of course! Our health food stores carry them here in Mich for not much more than reg tortillas...3-5 carbs apiece, doesn't feel terrible for bread products! They have many different flavors, well worth it to me. Sorry ofr the mixup!

Nat490
Sun, Aug-17-03, 02:39
That's okay laribien,
Figured you ment La Tortillas Low Carb Tortillas. Thank goodness most of our markets here in my little town now carry them but most only in the wheat. Here at my daughters Alberstsons Grocery Store carries them in both the 3 gram carb size and a larger 5 grams size in all flavors.
For those who don't know about these little wonders that are so great to wrap most anything in or just toast and eat with a couple of table spoons of salas. Check them out here http://www.latortillafactory.com/LOWCARBoverview.htm

Shrimp Fajita quesadilla (melt butter, add 1/4 c. onion, cook until onions are almost translucent, add shrimp, cook until done, season with salt...remove from pan...heat up tortilla (I buy the la tortilla low carb brand) add your cheese (I use a LITTLE mozzarella, and cheddar)..once the cheese melts, add the shrimp onion mixture...fold tortilla in half..and I have it with a little ranch drizzled on top. Deviled Eggs Pork Rinds Hamburgers (with lettuce leaves as the bun) BaconWhat I am doing is taking the recipes for the foods that I ate on a regular basis...and just modifying them.

I have always been a menu planner. The family pretty much knows what we are having for dinner...I try to plan by the month. (Saves on the grocery bill too btw) So I am TRYING to just modify what I am cooking to fit into my diet needs.

(Hope this helps!)

I love Kristine's Saturday morning breakfast quiche - it's on the Kitchen forum under Breakfast ideas. You won't believe how good it is!
Almonds, macadamias, I can now eat just a few rather than by the handful because I'm not so hungry.
I can also recommend the dessert made with cream cheese/SF jello/Splenda. Try adding a little peppermint essence to green jello or a squeeze of lemon juice to strawberry jello.
If you can find a cottage cheese that is low in carbs, mix some with "diet" chocolate syrup! I have this for breakfast when I need something quick, and it takes care of the need for a "chocolate' experience as well!
Fry thin slices of zucchini in a little olive oil in a non-stick frypan, making sure to brown them well on both sides. Sprinkle with a small amount of garlic powder during cooking. Yum!!
Thank you for starting this thread and good luck!
SORRY - I just re-read your request and realised you specifically asked about induction foods, so you won't be able to have all these things yet - but you've got a lot to look forward to!

Breakfast: sandwich steak and eggs with a slice of cheese. Alternatively I will just make a quick egg salad and use slices of boiled ham to roll it up into breakfast ham/eggsalad tacos :-)

Lunch: Definately a chef salad (no croutons) cheese/ham/turkey/greens. Or just a garden salad with a scoop of tuna or chicken salad on top. Either one is very filling!

Snack: And I usually bring for a snack a individual wrapped piece of cheese (like the land o lakes cheddar) or a couple thin slices of liverwurst, or maybe celery with cream cheese

Dinner: I love chicken! check out these recipes that work with chicken....

Pound out a boneless breast so its nice and thin and big. Make a veggie/cheese mixture with a pat of soft butter and put a good spoonful at the top of the chick breast. Roll it up, and dip it in a beaten egg, then roll it in just a bit of parmesan cheese with salt and pepper, and bake. Its just awesome.

Some of the mixes I use are mozzarella/jack and spinache, or another favorite is broccoli and cheddar. spinache and feta is good too. Mushroom and cheddar...you can get very creative with this recipe.

DONT FORGET SEAFOOD. Go the supermarket and get yourself a good helping of fish and broil it with butter. Steam broccoli.... Serve with a shrimp cocktail that you serve with melted butter, a small side salad and your talking heaven!
