My hair has been falling out since I started Atkins in Jan - there's a clump of it after I wash it & several strands come out easily for 2 days after, which is not the norm. What minerals/vitamins am I deficient in? :q: I take a multi v, but I confess, not daily as I should. :nono: I heard someone say she lost a lot of hair from doing Atkins. Also my hair has been especially dry, even though I don't colour it & use plenty of deep conditioner, hardly ever blow dry it & use anti-frizz & shine products - anyone else experiencing this??

Here is a good link to help you with vitamins and supplements:

Hi Moca,

I too am experiencing similar problems as far as hair loss. I on the other hand have been taking vitamins regularly from day one including Basic#3, L-Carnatine, CoQ-10, Essential Oils, and Chromium Picolinate. I had this same problem in the past when I tried Atkins several years ago. I agree it would be interesting to get feedback if there are suggestions to alleviate this negative side effect - I Love this WOE otherwise! Good luck. Queenbee

I have been doing Atkins for a year and a half. When I started, I too lost lots of hair. I have always had real thick hair. So, It worried me quite a bit, but it did straighten out. Dr. Atkins strongly recommends supplements. I take Basic #3, EFA, Calcium, Potassium, PABA, CO Q 10 & B Complex.

Having thining hair is a common side affect for any weight loss plan - really anything that would act as a stressor to your system. For the first few months, I too had hair falling out. According to what I haver ead, you can go through a stress (change in diet in this case) and it will take a few months to fully reflect in your hair loss. My hair has stopped coming out quite some time ago, and has had a remarkable re-growth.

Just be sure to take your vitamins everyday!

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm sure you are right about the stress. I just never put the two together! Thanks, Queenbee

When I was taking a medication that caused hair loss, zinc and selenium were suggested as minerals that could help. I don't know if this was specific to this particular drug (maybe it depleted these minerals?) but it is worth some research. Good luck.

Hi there,

Yes, stress definitely seems to be implicated.

Lora from the Low Carb Luxury website has some good advice for sufferers here. (http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/newsletter/lclnewsvol02-no07.html#letters)

I started the Atkins diet in sep, 6 weeks ago a bald patch apeard on the crown of my head, i have now noticed that a patch is starting to form on the front above my fringe - on the parting :-). the sad thing is i am a hairdresser, and of course this does not look good for my job.

I went ot my GP on Monnday and she prescribe me a scalp tonic. my ,manager has suggested raw Garlis is brilliant for hair loss.. i supose it is worth a try. (but very smelly).

I am conviced it is the result of the Atkins diet. and i have stopped the diet for this reason.

I just hope it grrows back as quick as it fell out..

Huh. Weird. My hair actually *stopped* falling out once I started Atkins.
