Atkins diet is very workable for diabetes - some who have been on insulin have been able to control it by diet alone.

There is alos a low-carb plan that was designed for diabetic person: Dr. Berstein's diabetic solution.

Hi Pam, Atkins works very well for diabetics. Eating low carbs helps to bring your blood sugar to more normal numbers and helps to stabilize.

If you talk to your doctor about it they may not agree, but I have found that if I emphasize what I do eat and not what I don't eat it helps. I emphasize that I am not eating processed carbs, but eat lots of vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. That seems to make her happy, plus the results in my blood sugar.

If you are checking your blood sugars you will probably see pretty immediate results if you follow Atkins closely, any cheats of carbs or sugars will effect it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the answers. I know I'm second guessing the doctor, but had a blood test done a few days ago and got a call from the girl at the surgery saying doc wanted to see me. Asked her how the tests turned out. Apparently cholesterol was ok (5.1), but she said Urea, Glucose and Liver function test were not so good. To me, that sounds like diabetes! Seeing doc in a few hours and I just wanted to have my facts in front of me if that is what it is! Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I really am doing good on Atkins and would be sorry to have to give it up. Even taking his book in with me ... bookmarked the subject on diabetes.
Thanks again
Cheers...Pam

I was able to get off of Insulin after about 2 months of Atkins and control my BG with diet and exercise.

Let us all know how you get on....The advice about emphasising the veggies, olive oil and fish in your new diet should get you "brownie points" with the doc ! Then DO get Bernstein's book.

Good Luck !!

Sad to say, but poor Atkins has such a bad rap that I never mention his name in reference to my eating plan. People unfamiliar with the way this eating plan really works (medical personnel included) become defensive at the mere mention of his name.

I am actually following Dr. B's plan currently, but generally just tell people that I am Low Carbing...seems to be less objections when put that way.

I hope that one day Dr. Atkins will get the respect he deserves...seems like it may be sooner than later!! :)

Good Luck Pam...keep us posted!

Had blood tests done last week, got a call from doctors surgery saying doc wanted to see me re glucose, urea & liver function test. Of course, being me, I panicked. Immediately assumed diabetes. Spent 2 days reading up on the subject and finding out if Atkins worked with diabetes. Went into surgery armed with a mountain of information. Darn doctor laughed his head off!! All he wanted to tell me was how well everything had improved. Apparently, whatever the count is with the liver function test, I had dropped it by two-thirds! Told him that once I read in one of these forums that the body burns alcohol first before fat I had stopped drinking. *sigh*, at least one of us was happy! When he took my blood pressure (which is normally about 160/90), it read 130/70. He was gob-smacked. Yea, I punched the air in victory!!
This has been a real learning curve for me. I've found out all about diabetes and what these people have to live with.
Anyway, thank you all soo much for your help and support.
Cheers...Pam

Stick with it and you'll be amazed at how all numbers improve. The basic difference between Atkins and Bernstein is that the latter plan has only one phase: 30 grams CHO per day forever. More than the Atkins induction phase at 20, but you never increase it like you do with Atkins. I can honestly say that I don't miss the carbs at all. I therefore must be producing a lot less insulin than I was. I've been Bernsteining now for 1 and a half years, and I'm healthier now than I was 20 years ago.
