I know that I shouldn't really be posting this one - but I just thought that someone may know of any low carb cocktail recipes... My hubby had a coctail shaker etc for Christmas and we therefore had to use it (of course) but to my peril as Margarita's and Bailey's Irish cream are absolutley loaded with carbs.... Anyone out there with low carb ideas on these luvverley delish cocktails without too many carbs???????
ta muchly with anticipation and an empty cocktail glass in my hand...

When looking for a change from the standard G&T, or V&T, I concocted a cocktail while on vacation recently.
Tall glass of ice, jigger of vodka, club soda, and an oz. or so of Atkins strawberry syrup. Lemon, orange, or raspberry syrup would work as well. Quite wonderful if I say so myself. Guess you could also add a smidge of heavy cream to it too. HMMMMM, maybe I'll try that next.... :yum:

I'm not sure if it's a cocktail but a Bloody Mary is very low in carbs (vodka and tomato juice).

You need a blender for this one. Pineapple or tropical flavored drink mix (Kool-Aid, Crystal Light) or Jello (sugar free, of course, and use the mix dry, adding a little water while blending if necessary), crushed ice, coconut milk, sweetener to taste. Rum optional. Makes a decent Pina Colada.
Oh, and someone posted some recipes for homemade LC Kahlua and Bailey's. The search function ought to pull them up.
Cheers,

I don't know much about cocktails, but there is a new low carb beer I have noticed at the grocery store. I do not even remember the name, but I saw it at BI-LO and another store. Have not tried it either.

I made these on the weekend and they are sooooooooooo yummy,I couldnt drink them slowly.I mixed a package of lemon and a package of lemon lime chrystal lite with only half the water the package calls for.i then filled my blender about 2/3 full of ice, added 2 shots tequila and 2 shots triple sec (or gin) then added about a cup to 1&1/2 cups of the lime juice, one cup of frozen raspberries and about 2 shots of sugar free raspberry davinci.OMG,the 2 non low carbers that helped me drink them also thought they were awesome. Imagine,a drink that contains our much needed fibre.this recipe makes about 4 drinks. ENJOY

Thank you guys
I certainly shall be trying out the yummy recipes posted here
xcarbs what is chrystal lite? is it a jelly mix?
RCFLetcher I completley forgot about Bloody Mary's silly me
I found the recipes for the Kahlua and Baileys and shall endeavour to make them to try...
Although I am sooo partial to the Margarita's, my hubs make it with tequila (1.5 carbs), lime juice (2 carbs), triple sec (? carbs) and salt so therefore not too bad is it? 3.5 carbs all in all - that is if my reckoning is right...got the calories from calorieking.com (http://www.calorieking.com)
thanks again and cheers!

Ms. Fine,
A warning here about those margaritas. As a liqueur, Triple Sec is like Cointreau and loaded with sugar - use with caution! I believe it has about 7 gr. carb per oz.
Crystal Light is a sugar free drink mix. It would make a dandy substitute for lime juice and lower carb too.
One other thought. Have you considered a beer and diet lemon/lime soft drink mixture? I had an English friend years back who it a shandy.
Cheers! :)

An idea:
For flavored liquors, try using a plain spirit and adding SF Da Vinci.
Plain rum + Coconut Da Vinci = Malibu Rum
Plain vodka + tons of flavors = fun vodkas!
The possibilities are endless. :)

I like to have some drinks once in a while. I drink rum and diet coke, Premium gin and soda w/ lime and I add a little bit of splenda to sweeten it. Michelob Ultra-once in a while-depends on the carbs I have had for the day. They are now selling little cans of Michelob Ultra-Only 2.2 carbs per can. I just bought the drink mixes off of Atkins- I am going on a cruise and don't want to be left out. I really love those frozen margarita and daiquiri's. Yummy! Someone said in another thread that rum, low carb chocholate syrup, and heavy cream makes a good mock Baileys.

The Peach flavor of Davinci Syrups (link (http://davincigourmet.com)) is quite tasty. I tart it up with lime juice and mix with vodka or rum, then dilute with Perrier to desired strength - cool and refreshing.

I'd like to second the suggestion about the cool splenda sweetened cocktail mixes found at www.netrition.com. I have purchased a bunch of them. They look great, but honestly, I haven't broken into them yet. Still...I'm SO happy they are there!!! I think they had margarita, collins, even pina colada mixers! Exciting!

martini!! i never even had one before atkins, and I love them now... (esp. the olives :) )
also- a good creamy drink is to have some UNSWEETENED soy milk (can be hard to find, and not all are good- try vitasoy at 5 g per cup, all the other brands I've tried with fewer carbs are watery (i.e. westsoy at 1 g per cup)) with a shot of cream, vanilla, splenda, and rum. also good with coconut milk in it...
also- i made up this one the other day: diet cream soda with cream and vanilla stoli (vodka). it's like an alcoholic ice cream float.
crystal lite with anything- it blends with hard alcohol really well

I have a queston about the martini's. I think I've tasted one before and didn't like it. (long ago). If I ordered one of the flavored ones, like apple, it'll likely have sugar in it right? Any bartenders out there? Is there any kind of a flavored martini I can get that doesn't contain sugar?

I had a yummy one once that was vanilla vodka and a sweet vermouth. I realize that the non-dry vermouth had carbs, but I figured since the portion was smallish, it wasn't much more than you'd find in a glass of wine (which I still allow myself occassionally) at least I hope....

Right now I'm having a rum and Diet-rite cola. Not bad but way too sweet. Next time more lime less cola.
I've tried Martinis several time and the only part I like is the olives. Even with Tanguerey gin they were not to my taste.
Vodka or gin and diet tonic are more to my taste but I've had this lovely Meyers Rum around since Christmas and thought I'd have a nip. :D

I would have thought Vanilla Vodka was filled with sugar? and I've never had a flavored martini that wasn't loaded with sugar. Maybe you could experiment and make a sugar free one? ;)
I made the kahluah and irish cream on this website. I love the Irish Cream but the kahluah was so watery. It was yummy mixed with I.C. and frozen though. Here's a few recipes I found on another forum. Want more?
Khrystah's "Hard Lemonade" Lemonade Syrup
1 cup lemon juice (5-6 lemons)
1/2 cup water
zest of 1 lemon
1 cup Splenda
With a sharp knife, peel yellow rind from lemon in thin strips. (Be careful
not to get too much of the white pulp which will make it taste bitter.)
Combine rind, juice and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat
and simmer about 3 minutes.
Cool, strain and stir in Splenda.
Store in glass jar or bottle in refrigerator.
Khrystah's Hard Lemonade Drink
1 tablespoon Khrystah's "Hard Lemonade" Lemonade syrup
1 cup ice cold water
1 1/2 ounce vodka
ice
Mix water and syrup together. Add vodka and ice. Stir and enjoy! Extra
sweetener can be added if necessary.
Khrystah's Hot Lemon Soother
1 tablespoon Khrystah's "Hard Lemonade" Lemonade syrup
1 cup boiling hot water
1 or 2 whole cloves
sweetener to taste if necessary
Spiced rum to taste
Mix the syrup into the hot water adding sweetener if you like. Drop in the
cloves and top with some spiced rum. This is excellent for soothing a sore
throat )
(Leave the rum out for a nonalcoholic soother).
-----------
Coconut Liquor
Yield: 3 cups
Container: Wide mouth jar
2 cups unsweetened coconut
4 Coriander seeds
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cup vodka
1/2 cup brandy
Add all ingredients together and steep for 3-4 weeks.
Turn jar every few days.
The coconut tends to be porous and absorbs the alcohol so be sure to
thoroughly strain and filter the mixture to yield the largest amount.
Natural coconut may also be used, but tends to be watery and requires more
coconut.
-------------
Almond Liqueur
Shared By: Khrystah
3 cups Splenda
2 1/4 cups water
3 lemons + the rind, finely grated
1 quart Vodka
3 tablespoons almond extract
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
Combine first 3 ingredients in a Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Reduce heat.
Cool completely before bottling.
Makes about 6 1/2 cups.
----------------
Fragolo (Strawberry Liqueur)
Shared By: Khrystah
This is a sweet strawberry liqueur, with an alcohol content of about 40%.
It's quite nice in the winter after dinner.
When you have finished steeping the strawberries, drain them well and serve
them for dessert (though not to children). They'll go quite well over ice
cream.
3/4 pound very ripe strawberries (wild if possible)
A half-inch piece of vanilla bean, crushed
1 3/4 cups Splenda
1/2 cup water
1 1/3 cups grain alcohol
Hull the strawberries and lightly rinse them, then put them in a 2-quart
glass jar. Add the other ingredients, seal the jar, and steep the
strawberries for a month, gently shaking them once or twice a day.
When you have finished steeping, remove the strawberries by gently pouring
the liqueur through a wire mesh strainer and into a bowl. Let the
strawberries drain well, then transfer the liqueur into a clear glass
bottle, using a funnel and a piece of filter paper.
Stopper the bottle, let it set for about 7 months, and it's ready.

Grand Orange-Cognac Liqueur (Grand Marnier)
From: Classic Liqueurs by Long & Kibbey
Shared By: Khrystah
1/3 cup orange zest
1/2 cup Splenda
2 cups cognac or French brandy
1/2 teaspoon glycerine (optional, for texture)
Place zest and Splenda in a small bowl. Mash together with the back of a
wooden spoon or pestle. Continue until sweetener is absorbed into zest.
Place in aging container. Add cognac. Stir, cap and age in a cool, dark
place 2 to 3 months. Shake monthly.
After initial aging, strain and filter. Stir with a wooden spoon to combine.
Cap and age 3 months more before serving.
*Seville oranges produce the authentic taste but any type of orange
peel/zest may be used with good results.

Dear Iowagirl,
Yes rum is made from sugar. In fact all alcoholic drinks are made from carbohydrates. This sugar (or other carbs) are eaten by the yeast during the fermentation process and become alcohol. In this way they vanish.

I believe Atkins recommends no alcohol during induction however during OWL its OK to indulge every now and then.
Also, someone asked about low carb beer. That beer is Micolob Ultra. Also, Miller Lite is low in carbs as well. The Mic is 2.6 grams and the Miller lite I believe is 3.2 or close to that. There are several threads on these beers. Hope this helps.

What can I say Iowagirl, I think they are awesome. I must admit that they are an aquired taste but they are a great muscle relaxer. I have experimented quite a bit and found that there is quite a bit of difference between cheap gin and the good stuff. The cheaper vodkas are ok but again the higher quality is best. I like to mix 1/2 beefeaters or Bombay Saphire with 1/2 gordons or smirnoff vodka. I usually add olives for a pre dinner drink or a lemon twist for after dinner. I usually just drink them at home. The last time I bought one made like this out and about it cost $9.50 at Red Lobster. I also prefer mine on the rocks, the colder it is the better it is.

Being of Irish (and Italian) descent I have been able to handle whiskey with no problem. This martini, on the other hand..I'm thinking it was just vodka in a fancy glass with two olives.

I found a brilliant recipe for Baileys - no sugar at all....although I don't know the quantities - so I guess not that brilliant after all.....
whiskey
coffee
cream
milk (a few carbs here but I guess it could be switched for unsweetened soya milk)
whisk it all up and drink
Am unsure if it is coffee granules or already made up coffee - I shall definately experiment at weekend so it'll be me whispering on Monday
Although this way you could make it up per glass or per jug

Its not a cocktail, but Jello Shots are great! Make it the same way you would regularly, except when you add the cold water, substitue however much mixer you want with it for the water(usually about 1/2 to 2/3 cup). Usually I pour the mixer into a measuring cup, then add ice until it gets to one cup. You can have cranberry and vodka, strawberry and rum, or even lime and margarita.
Dont go too overboard with the SF Jello though because of the nutrasweet. They (the jello shots) are really addicting!

Guinness is a relatively lowcarb beer - 4-5 grams per pint. I'll take one of those over the so-called American foo-foo, ultra watered down, wee-wee "lowcarb" beers any day! ;)
FYI- Flavored vodkas are not sweet. They just have the essence of whatever they are flavored with. And besides, vanilla by itself is not sweet. One of my fave's is vanilla vodka mixed with diet cream soda. Or, that green apple (essence, again) Smirnoff with mineral water on ice.

Take any SugarFree jello, and choose your damage. My favorite is Strawberry SF jello with Rum.
Heat a cup of water and mix in with the jello...stir until it disolves.
In a measuring cup pour in the amount of liquor that you want in it. I usually add about 3/4 cup for the whole batch, some may not like it so strong. For the remainder of the cup I add ice, you can add cold water if you want, the ice just helps it set faster. This amount that you add in should all equal ONE more cup.
Pour 1-2 oz in small dixie cups. Each box of jello should make about 11 shots. I usually try to find the plastic dixie cups. The paper ones disolve easily.
Put them all on a tray and put em in the fridge! Let them set and enjoy!

Tis my 40th birthday on Sunday and am celebrating this Saturday nite with BIG party with loadsa friends, I have bought the frozen raspberries to blitz, but don't know where I can find the drink mixes and am still trying to find them but if not I shall improvise. Martini's are definately on the list of must haves, and also tequilas, I am putting jugs of Bloody Mary's and the Virgin ones too out on the tables outside instead of fruit punches, The food will be hardly any carby things - sandwiches for those who want though, but mainly things like chicken drumsticks, meatballs (lc ones of course), veggies to dip in lc dips, sausages on cocktail sticks with the cheese and pickled onions... oh and sf jelly and icecream or cream
Champaigne is quite high in carbs isn't it....? I would like just one tiny weeny glass that night.
What say you guys? can you think of anything else in the drinkie line and in the food line? Oh and then a fantastic hangover cure would go down a treat for Sunday........tee hee

How about wine! I love Chardonnay..sp?
I also like the Canada Dry Raspberry Tonic with Vodka, or if you prefer, Gin.
There is also Michelob Ultra, 2.6 carbs/bottle. I heard through the grapevine about some really low carb version of smirnoff ice, but I have yet to find it.
There are lots of low carb mixers you can buy online, like margarita and pina colata. I havnt tried them yet though.

I didnt notice that you are from England! Well hello from FLorida! If your stores carry Michelob, then they SHOULD carry Michelob Ultra. It has become extremely popular here. Just about all my friends drink it....lo carbers or not!
Canada Dry has also always been known for carrying a line of tonic waters. It doesnt have to be Canada Dry though. You can try any tonic water, sparkling water, spritzer, etc.... Good old Gin and Tonic!

For heavens sake, have that glass of champaigne on your 40th! I can't imagine that champaigne has any more carbs than wine, which isn't a heavy hitter when consumed in moderation. Just make sure it isn't sweet (look for "dry" or "brut") and you're set. How much does a champaigne glass hold, anyways? Not much.
After the fun of the pop and a toast to your longevity, swich over to something else.

Saw some folks asking about Jell-O shots and just had to toss in my two pennies:
Well, essentially, you substitute liquor for water in a regular Jell-O recipe, usually at less than half and half.
So basically, for example:
1 Large box of Jell-O (4 cup size)
2 Cups of boiling water
2 Cups of Vodka
Dissolve the Jell-o into the boiling water. Let cool, then add the Vodka. Pour into molds (small party cups or cupcake pan with paper liners) and chill until firm.
Now, you can add less or more booze to your liking. This basic recipe gives them too strong an alcohol taste in my opinion. Also, with different flavors of Jello and different alcohol, you can make lots of different kinds. My personal fave is the Margarita Shot:
1 large box (4 cup size) or two small boxes (2 cup size) of Lime Flavor Jell-O.
2 cups boiling water
1/2 cup cold water
1 cup Tequila
1/2 cup Triple Sec
Dissolve the Jell-o into the boiling water. Add cold water, Tequila, and Triple Sec. Chill until firm. Yummy!
There are thousands of recipes. If you can let me know what kind of alcohol you would like to use, I'm sure I can think of a recipe or two. Who said hanging out with frats wouldn't amount to anything? :)

And, Bogus -- I've tried tequila and Diet Mt. Dew. I've also tried tequila with diet grapefruit soda. Both make a darned good mock margarita. I pass on the salt, and I don't use the blender, but to each his or her own. Anyway, one sounds good right now!

We are moving to Somerset. It is going to be a family venture!
My parents sold their house here in California, and are buying a house over there. We are then starting a business - Curves for Women - beginning in the Taunton area.
Curves is very popular here in the US and they are starting to pop up in the UK now as well. don't know if you have heard of them, but they are a fitness club just for women that promotes a thirty minute complete body workout (circuit training) that you do three times a week (I just got home from the one I belong to).
We are all Yanks, but have lived

Ok i am going to try an experiment. I have already done this to make LC icecream. You get strawberrys, cream, splenda, mix in blender, pour into ice cube tray, freeze, pry out ice cubes with fork (they are hard to get out) then I have an ice shaver (i guess you could use a blender) then shave ice into cup and add rum. yummy daquaris. I hope. I'll let ya know. the ice cream comes out great though.

p s Rum and diet coke is good. does segrams 7 have carbs. maybe you could make 7 7's with diet 7 up

You may note something that won't work for you in some of these recipes. Substitute to your hearts content.
Bullshot
1 1/2 ounces vodka
3 ounces beef bouillon (I use canned beef broth)
1 to 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
Dash A-1 sauce * (optional - may be carby)
Dash Tabasco
Dash Angostura bitters
Celery salt
Shake ingredients with cracked ice; strain into either a tumbler filled with ice or a cocktail glass without ice. Garnish with a lemon twist. Variation: Substitute pepper-flavored vodka for regular vodka. Dust the rim of the glass with celery salt. To make a Bloody Bull, add a hefty splash of tomato juice. To mix a Barnacle Bull, add a splash of Clamato juice.
Lo-carb Lemon Drop
1 1/2 ounces citron vodka
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1 teaspoon splenda
Shake ingredients with cracked ice. Strain into a frosted cocktail glass; garnish with a lemon wheel. (when you're not lo-carbing, use half a teaspoon of splenda and half a teaspoon of cointreau)
Caesar (or bloody Caesar)
1 ounce vodka
4 ounces tomato-clam juice (aka Clamato juice)
Pinch of salt and pepper
Dash Worcestershire sauce
2 to 3 dashes horseradish
Celery salt
Celery stalk
Stir ingredients with cracked ice in a chilled highball or delmonico glass. Stir in Worcestershire and salt and pepper. Coat the glass's rim with celery salt. Garnish with a celery stalk and a lemon wedge.
Variation: Use V8 or Snappy Tom tomato juice cocktail instead of Clamato for a Bloody Mary
Lo-carb Moscow Mule
2 ounces vodka
1 ounce lime juice
4 ounces diet ginger ale
Use vodka that has been stored in a freezer. The ginger ale/beer and fruit should have been stored in a refrigerator. Stir vodka and juice together well in a chilled Collins glass. Add fresh cracked ice and a swizzle stick; top with ginger beer. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Variation: substitute rye whiskey or Canadian whiskey for Vodka, subtract the lime juice and you have a Rye & Ginger. With good rye and Stewarts Ginger Beer, this is one of my favorite cocktails.
Sazerac Cocktail
2 ounces rye
3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
splash Pernod or Herbsaint
Coat inside of thoroughly chilled large old-fashioned glass with Pernod/Herbsaint, turning the glass to coat it evenly and thoroughly. Shake rye and bitters with cracked ice until very cold; strain into prepared old-fashioned glass; twist lemon peel into drink. Varation: Sub black rum (Myers, Gosling Black Seal, Bacardi Select) for rye; garnish with orange twist.
Daiquiri
1 1/2 ounces rum
3/4 ounce lime juice
1/2 teaspoon splenda
6 ounces cracked ice
Blend in electric mixer; strain into large chilled cocktail glass.
Nationale Cocktail
2 ounces light rum
1 ounce apricot brandy
1 ounce lime juice
Shake with ice, strain into cocktail glass.
Lo Carb Mojito
2-3 ounces light rum
1 lime
2 teaspoons splenda
Fresh Mint
ice and soda water
Place splenda & a large pinch (small handful) of mint, and splash of soda water in a pint glass. Use handle of a wooden spoon or 'muddler' to lightly press mint and dissolve splenda until it smells of spearmint gum. Squeeze both halves of lime into the glass, leaving one hull in the mixture. Add rum, stir, and fill with ice. Top with soda water, garnish with mint sprig and serve.

Do I think Bacardi will do for the rum in these? Certainly, one variety or another of Bacardi would be fine. Light Bacardi rum works well for Mojitos & Daquiris. A well made Mojito or Daquiri is a wonderful thing.
Sidebar: I find that after going without carbs for a while, the natural sweetness of my favorite liquors (really good bourbon, cognac, old rye and 'sipping' quality rum) is plenty of flavour for me. The flavour of these liquors may be too intense for most cocktails/mixed drinks at other times...but they taste GOOD after you haven't had anything 'sweet' for a while. This is a good thing.
Tho' I enjoy Manhattans and Sazeracs at home, and I'm happy to mix other cocktails up for guests, I seldom order mixed drinks or cocktails when I'm out. I 'call for'/ask the bartender for some specific 'best quality' liquor, sometimes with a twist of lemon. I always ask for icewater to use as a 'chaser' in between sips. I order dry wine when I'm dining out, sometimes with a glass of cognac/bourbon/rum for dessert.
I find that I can monitor my intake of alcohol quite precisely this way, which can be important. Mixed drinks can fool the unwary, there may be 1.5 ounces or 4.5 ounces of alcohol in the glass, unless you made it yourself you won't know. If you're 'allowing' yourself 2 or 3 drinks on your diet, you may actually have reached your limit with the first glass. Something to be aware of.
I enjoy myself but this way I never have a 'sugar hangover' from too much fruit juice or stomach issues from 'gassy' mixers. YMMV, of course, but this has worked well for me.

Thanks texascarl - you are a mine of information - do come and fix me a cocktail if you're ever my way :D they sound so gorgeous
I asked about the rum cos I have only noticed Barcardi and then the dark rums (I don't usually drink rum you see, I'm a wine, champagne and coctail drinker, with a few gin and slimline tonics thrown in now and again....)
YMMV, of course, but this has worked well for me. I'm glad that this has worked well for you but what has? what is YMMV?
I gave my hubby a cocktail shaker, some mixes and a cocktail book for Xmas and we so haven't looked back tee hee

Texascarl - what is in a Manhattan?
Going out with a friend, later...not sure Michelob Ultra will be available. Learned my lesson with vodka martinis (you're a better man than I am, Cpt.Kirk).
If all else fails I'll stick to rum and diet coke.

Fri, Jun-13-03, 12:35
A Manhattan is a 'martini' for bourbon/rye drinkers. Liquor flavoured with vermouth.
Manhattan
2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
1/4 to 1/2 oz 'sweet' vermouth
dash bitters
Shake with ice, strain into a cocktail glass.
Going out with a friend, later...not sure Michelob Ultra will be available.
If Michelob Ultra isn't available, Miller Lite has just a fraction of a carb more than Ultra.

I used to be quite a fan of Jack Daniels in my day - maybe a Manhattan is right up my alley. I don't make drinks at home I hope I can safely assume they are always mixed the same, wherever I go.
Miller Lite is good, too.

oh and is bitters = Angastora bitters?
Iowagirl hope you enjoyed your drinkiepoos, my dh wants to say that a Whiskey sling is yummy for those that like whiskey/bourbon/rye....
Whiskey Sling
1 measure of lemon juice and 1 tsp water and stir till 1 tsp sugar substitue is dissolved (or omit this step totally)
Pour 2 measures American blended whiskey, stir to mix with the lemon and water. Half fill a small, chilled tumber with the cracked ice and strain the cocktail over it ....
He swears by this - Enjoy!
Gin Sling
1 measure lemon juice and 1 tsp water till the sugar substitute is dissolved (if using sugar subs - I quite like it without) Pour 2 measures of gin and stir. Half fill a small, chilled tumber with the cracked ice and strain the cocktail over it ....
Right now it's Friday and boy oh boy do I need that drink... I have now got in my hand - oh ok on the table next to me a Diet Red Bull mixed with Vodka! only 1g per 100ml therefore 2.5g's YAY!
Have fab weekends all and I'll check in later to see if there are any more posts on alcoholism... :D

oh and is bitters = Angastora bitters?
Yes.
I always keep Peychaud's bitters as well, they're very good in a Sazerac. Orange bitters are sometimes called for as well, you can get orange bitters here in the States from Fee Brothers - 716-544-9530. Peychaud's and Angostura bitters should be available everywhere spirits are sold.
When you read 'bitters' in a cocktail recipe it's safe to assume they mean Angostura bitters. Otherwise the writer will specify Peychaud's or Orange bitters, etc...
Just to illustrate the difference that bitters/cordials can make, here's an example from the Esquire Drink Database regarding Manhattans:
2 oz good rye (in case of emergency--you need a Manhattan and you're passing a bar of the "Rye? Nah." variety--Canadian Club will do; it's got lots of rye in it)
1 oz Italian vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Strain into in chilled cocktail glass and garnish with twist or, of course, Maraschino cherry (which is subject to the same challenge re: purity as adding an olive to a Martini).
Of course, human beings, being human beings, can never leave well enough alone. Here, then, are the obligatory variants.
First, a few you can make by monkeying around with the bitters: lose the Angostura and pitch in a splash of Amer Picon and it's a Monahan; a splash of anisette and it's a Naragansett; two dashes of cherry brandy and a dash of absinthe and you've got a McKinley's Delight. Leave a dash of the Angostura in, add a dash of orange bitters and three dashes of absinthe: a Sherman.
Or you can tinker with the vermouth. Replace half the Italian vermouth with French for a so-called Perfect Manhattan. Equal parts of rye, French vermouth and Italian vermouth: a Jumbo. Make that with bourbon: a Honolulu (no bitters at all in those last two). Cut the Italian vermouth entirely and make it half bourbon and half French vermouth: a Rosemary. To turn that into a Brown University, just add a couple dashes orange bitters. Coming almost full circle, if you make your classic two-to-one Manhattan with French vermouth instead of Italian and a dash of Amer Picon and one of Maraschino, you're in Brooklyn. And there are more--the Rob Roy, for one, but we gotta stop somewhere.
If you don't know what Amer Picon is, or the difference between French Vermouth and Italian Vermouth or why it's important...or if you just wish to learn any number of interesting things regarding the cocktail, here are a few good places to delve for answers. Have fun, kids.

Hmmm...I'm in Iowa at an Irish restaurant with a Mexican friend and I order a Manhattan. What are the odds it will contain anything Italian or French?
I took a sip and realized I needed to eat my steak first. I think they just gave me bourbon on the rocks. Not that that is a bad thing, just wasn't prepared for it.
It just so happens the other establishments we went to had Michelob Ultra. Not bad.

Hi LadyBelle, yes you are absolutely right English food is ... urm I can't think of a word .... maybe unadventurous would be polite, blandness is certainly one to describe it too, but Irish food is good, they do seem to be less restrained in their cooking (I am trying so hard to think of the right politically correct words here.... tee hee), but no we liked the Irish fare. My hub has just come in the study and says he likes the liver and onions and their mash potatoes called Colcannon which is mash with cabbage and onions in it - :yum: I don't know why there aren't many Irish restaurants.... perhaps it's cos they do the pubs instead -

Minneapolis is in a state called Minnesota (next state north). The capitol is St.Paul. Iowa is in the central US - between Illinois and Nebraska. I happen to live in a city right on the Mississippi River. Dig out that atlas!
Ok, the restaurant doesn't have all Irish fare but it is owned by Irish folk and along with typical American food they provide a year round supply of corned beef and cabbage, mulligan stew - stuff like that. Guinness, too, of course. :p

Guinness is a relatively lowcarb beer - 4-5 grams per pint. I'll take one of those over the so-called American foo-foo, ultra watered down, wee-wee "lowcarb" beers any day!
BWAH!
Ok, ShellyF34, you are my hero for the day. Hilarious. I'm American, but I lived in Scotland for a year, and I totally agree with your assessment of American "lite" beers. Like water.
I'm hoping that all of you LC experts can answer a few "Cocktail Questions" for me.
I've been cheating on Atkins since May of this year (I call it "cheating on Atkins" because I've never actually done it correctly the entire time, though I've still managed to lose 18 lbs), but the other day, while skimming through Suzanne Somers' latest book, I realized that I've been Sommersizing without knowing it.
On her plan, until we've lost ALL of our weight, we can't drink alcohol at all, right? Not even low carb beer?
Also, since olives and nuts go so well with alcohol, I feel it's Ok to ask about them in this thread. Why, oh, why can't we have nuts and olives in Suzanne Somers' plan? If we can have beans, it stands to reason that we should be able to have olives and nuts. I don't understand this.
One more question: what's better: V8 Juice or plain tomato juice?
Peace,
Tracy

Hi Tracey
First of all well done on your weight loss that's really fab! :yay:
One more question: what's better: V8 Juice or plain tomato juice?
I've just checked calorieking.com (http://www.calorieking.com/) and looked up Tom juice and v8 - well the tom juice depends on the make your'e buying so be sure to check the labels... but the 1st one on the list that I picked for info is for 6 floz = 31 cals and 7.7 carbs
the v8 doesn't have a vegetable juice but the one I picked for you was v8 lemon twist for 8 floz = 48 cals and 10 carbs, but I did look for a vegetable juice and several popped up so I picked Odwalla and that is 70 cals and 18 carbs - so basically it's up to you what you pick - just check labels and check them all!
In induction of Atkins you can't have tomato juice so I would think that veggie juice wouldn't be an option either - I can't help you on the Suzanne Somers as I haven't read the book. I know that we (Atkins) can have olives and nuts after induction but again, I am sorry I can't offer any advice on the Somers bit....
Hope that helps a little - Good luck

Thank you for all the help, fine! Yes, label reading has saved me plenty of carb mistakes. For one thing, I was thinking that--since half-n-half (half cream/half whole milk) only had 1 carb, it was safe. Not necessarily so, since that's 1 carb per tablespoon. So heavy cream it is, though it is tons more expensive.
I love nuts and olives. Not sure that I can stay on the Somers plan if they are forbidden.
Thank you for the weightloss congrats. I feel so much better! I see that you are only 3 pounds from your dream weight! That is awesome.
Peace!

No worries Tracey - and thanks - that 3lbs is gonna take forever I'm sure (they always say that hey? the closer you are to goal the longer it takes.....
We don't get half and half out here in the UK but I think I know what you mean, yes the heavy (what we call double) cream would be your best bet....second to that is what we call whipping cream, it doesn't come whipped you have to do that but it's not as bad in carbs as the single cream... I hope that makes sense.
Tracey have you considered starting up a journal - it really, really, really, really does help - it does me no end anyways. Also, when you log your food intake in your journal you can see where you go wrong, where it works and what's happening too, and people do stop by and encourage and inspire....you can click on my journal if you like to see wht goes on in a journal and look in others and then maybe you could do one for you too. Good luck and happy lc-ing xx
